Community Days:
Fun For Kids of All Ages

On the third weekend of July every year the PVFD and the Ladies Auxiliary organize a festival for area residents and visitors. The festival begins Friday evening with a bed race. Area residents come to watch as local businesses & fire departments push wheeled beds down Center Street in a race for charity. After the bed race, the beer tent opens and a live band or DJ plays for all to hear in downtown Petersburg.

Thousands of spectators line the streets as Saturday begins with a parade through town at noon. Several area fire departments bring trucks to show in the parade. Participants in the parade range from the Summerfield High School band to area politicians to local farmers and other businesses. Children fill bags with candy that is tossed from parade vehicles.

As a fundraiser, the Ladies Auxiliary hold a silent auction. The PVFD runs a double elimination horseshoe tournament which begins shortly after the parade ends and usually lasts several hours. Many teams come from as far away as Adrian to participate in our horseshoe tournament.

Later that evening the beer tent is in full swing as a live band plays in the street.

Community Day began in 1976 and has been an annual tradition ever since. The festival serves two purposes: It helps to build community spirit by allowing area residents to come together for a day of fun. The event is also a major fund raiser for the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department.

If you are interested in participating in Community Days either in the parade or by having a booth, you can either call the fire hall at 734-279-2525 or email Ron Wells.
