Apparatus
The Summerfield Township Volunteer Fire Department currently operates 7 vehicles & and a boat. The STVFD also owns a smoke trailer for search and rescue training purposes.Rescue Trucks
The Summerfield Township Volunteer Fire Department currently operates two rescue trucks. Fire runs account for only a small percentage of our total calls. The majority of the call that we run are rescue calls. Our primary rescue truck, 23-9 is used on virtually every call that we run.
Engines & Tankers
The vehicles often considered the most important for any fire service are the engines and tankers. These large trucks are the most versatile in the fleet. Not only do they carry water and anywhere from 2-6 firefighters, but they often carry other large equipment like jaws of life, generators, and flood lights.
One of the major differences between rural fire departments like ours, and major city departments is that rural departments are often required to shuttle water to structure fires, as opposed to connecting directly into a municipal water system via hydrants. It is for this reason that large tanker trucks are found more frequently in rural departments.
Grass Trucks
Grass, field, or brush fires are a somewhat common occurrence during the Spring, Summer, & Fall in rural areas. Using a large engine or tanker to fight these fires is often difficult and cumbersome. A smaller, more easily maneuverable four wheel drive vehicle is usually preferred because the areas where these fires often occur are either tightly confined trails, muddy fields or both.
The Summerfield Township Volunteer Fire Department owns two vehicles which are primarily used to fight these types of fires.
Other Apparatus
The Summerfield Township Volunteer Fire Department owns two apparatus which do not fit into the category of "Rescue Trucks", "Engines", or "Grass Trucks". These are a boat and a training smoke trailer.
